7 steps to launching a side hustle

7 Steps To Launching Your Side Hustle

As teachers, we're always on the lookout for ways to make a little extra cash without stretching our already packed schedules too thin. That's where side hustles come in—not only can they beef up your bank account, they can also be a lot of fun, especially when they tap into your personal interests and talents.

But let’s be real—starting a side hustle might seem a bit daunting at first. That’s why I’ve simplified the process into seven straightforward steps. This guide is designed to help you find, start, and grow a side hustle that not only brings in some extra income but also brings you joy.

So, let’s dive into these seven steps and get you set up for success with your new side hustle. Ready? Let’s do this!

STEP 1: Choose Your Side Hustle

If you're not quite sure where to start, I've got just the thing. Check out my previous post on “5 Questions to Help Find A Side Hustle”—it's a great resource to help you zero in on what you’re uniquely equipped to do. Here’s a quick rundown of those crucial questions:

  • What am I good at that others aren't? This helps pinpoint your unique skills that set you apart—think about those compliments you keep getting from friends or the tasks your colleagues always defer to you.

  • What gaps can I fill? Look around. What’s missing in your community or within your existing networks that you could provide?

  • How can I improve existing products or services? Maybe there’s a way to tweak a product or upgrade a service that could use your personal touch to shine.

  • What am I passionate about? Dive into what you love. It’s not just about making money; it’s about connecting and creating value that resonates with others.

  • What unique opportunities do I have access to? Sometimes it’s about being in the right place at the right time or having access to a particular resource that others don’t.

Side Note: Depending on what hustle you choose, there might be some legal hoops to jump through. For instance, those of you looking to sell homemade goodies, your state’s cottage laws might let you sell at farmers markets without much hassle. But brewing kombucha for sale? That could require a brewer’s license due to fermentation.

And it’s not just about food. When I started my exterior cleaning business in Tennessee, I didn’t need a license, but this isn’t the case everywhere. So, make sure to do your homework to avoid any legal snags down the line.

Step 2. Beta Test and Refine

Alright, so you’ve nailed down what your side hustle is going to be. What’s next? Before you go all in, let's start small. Think of this stage as the test run for your big idea—kind of like a dress rehearsal. This is where your trusted circle comes into play. Tap into your friends, family, and even close colleagues. Why? Because they're likely to give you the honest feedback you need without the sugarcoating. Plus, testing your ideas with people who want you to succeed provides a safe space to see what works and what doesn’t.

As your initial testers use your product or service, gather all the feedback you can. Remember, every piece of feedback is golden, especially if it’s not what you want to hear. Use this input to tweak and improve your hustle. It’s all about iteration—refine, refine, refine! And while it's important to stay open to constructive criticism, also learn to distinguish between useful feedback and plain old negativity. Listen to the wisdom that helps you grow, and filter out the noise from naysayers.

What if the feedback suggests bigger changes? That’s where pivoting comes into play. Maybe your initial idea needs a slight shift in direction to better meet the needs of your potential market. Pivoting isn’t about starting over—it’s about adjusting your course based on what you’ve learned. How do you know when to pivot? Look for patterns in feedback that suggest something isn’t working as well as it could be, or when a different approach keeps being suggested.

Whether it’s tweaking your pricing, changing a feature, or even targeting a different audience, these adjustments can significantly enhance your side hustle's appeal and viability. Remember, the most successful businesses are often those that have adapted wisely to feedback and circumstances. Keep a flexible mindset, and be ready to make the changes that will lead your side hustle toward greater success.

Step 3. Establish Branding and Pricing

When it comes to turning your side hustle from idea to reality, your brand is your handshake with the world. It tells your story before you say a word. Here's how to get it right:

Developing a Memorable Name and Visual Identity

First, you need a business name for your side hustle. This is more than just a label; it’s the first impression. Make sure the name isn't already taken, check for domain availability if you plan to go online, and ensure it clearly relates to what you’re offering. Avoid ambiguity—your name should give potential customers a clear idea of what to expect. And a quick tip: swapping 'S' for 'Z' might not be the cutting-edge twist you think it is. Honestly, it doesn’t make your business look cool…it makes it sound cheap. While puns can be fun (like my old "Livin' on a Sprayer" exterior cleaning company), they can sometimes feel a bit played out. Aim for clear and clever over cute.

Storytelling and Connecting with Your Target Audience Through Your Brand

Your logo and brand design are next. These elements are crucial for selling your hustle to potential customers/clients because they visually communicate who you are and what you stand for. You can create a logo using free tools like Canva or enlist the help of AI, but for something a bit more polished, consider hiring a graphic designer from platforms like Fiverr. Budget-wise, this can be quite affordable, often ranging from $15 to $20. Remember, when it comes to design, less is often more. A simple, clean logo can be more impactful and memorable than something overly complex. It’s about creating a visual hook that’s easy to recognize and aligns with your brand story.

Pricing Models

Now, let’s talk money. Setting the right prices is more art than science, blending the cost of your time or materials, competitive pricing, and what your customers are willing to pay. If you’re offering a service, think about how much your time is worth per hour. What would make it worthwhile for you? For example, when I was doing exterior cleaning, my research showed that similar services in my city ranged from 23-27 cents per square foot. I decided 25 cents would be best for my business. If you’re selling products, calculate your costs and add a realistic profit margin that won’t price you out of the market. One of my side hustles involves making and selling small batch organic beard care products. Factoring in the cost of ingredients, and the time it takes to make, package, and ship, in my opinion, it would not be worth doing if I was only profiting a few dollars off of each bottle or beard oil. The goal is to find a sweet spot where your price reflects the value of your offer and meets market standards without undercutting your own profitability.

Setting up your branding and pricing correctly from the start establishes a professional image and ensures your side hustle is positioned for success. Remember, these are the foundations upon which customer relationships are built—they're worth getting right.

Step 4: Develop a Marketing Strategy

Marketing your side hustle might seem daunting, but it’s really just about telling your story to the right people in the right places. Let's break it down into manageable pieces, and remember, this is just the tip of the iceberg—we’ll dive deeper into more targeted strategies in future posts.

Choosing the Right Marketing Channels

The first step is to figure out where your potential customers are located. Are they scrolling through Instagram? Maybe they’re more likely to engage through email newsletters, or they might even be your local community members who respond well to a community listserv, flyers, or local events. Here's how to approach it:

  • Social Media: Platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter are great for visual and instant communication. Choose platforms that align with the demographics of your target audience.

  • Email: For more direct and personal communication, email newsletters can be incredibly effective. They're perfect for updates, promotions, and deep dives into your offerings.

  • Local Advertising: Don’t underestimate the power of local press, flyers, and community boards, especially if your side hustle caters to local services or goods.

Creative Marketing Tactics Tailored for Your Audience

Understanding your audience is key to effective marketing. Create content and promotions that speak directly to their needs and desires. Here are a few ideas:

  • Content Marketing: Share useful content related to your hustle. For example, if you’re starting a tutoring service, blog posts about learning strategies or educational challenges could draw in an interested audience.

  • Promotions and Discounts: Offering introductory discounts or creating bundle deals can attract customers to try out your service or product.

  • Partnerships: Collaborate with other local businesses or influencers who share your target market. This can increase your visibility and credibility.

Engagement and Promotion

Once you’ve got the attention of potential customers, the next step is to keep them engaged. Here’s how:

  • Interactive Content: Use polls, quizzes, and Q&A sessions on social media to engage with your audience. It’s a great way to learn more about their preferences and create a community around your brand.

  • Customer Testimonials: Showcasing success stories and testimonials can greatly boost your credibility and attract new customers. Word of mouth is always the single best way to win over new customers.

  • Regular Updates: Keep your audience informed and interested with regular updates about your services, new products, or behind-the-scenes content.

Effective marketing is about being proactive and going to where your customers are, not waiting for them to find you. By strategically using the right channels and engaging content, you can draw in your ideal customers and build a strong foundation for your side hustle.

Step 5: Acquire Your First Customers

Getting your first customers is a thrilling milestone for any side hustle. These early adopters not only validate your business idea, but can also turn into powerful advocates for your brand. Again…word of mouth is your best friend when it comes to building your hustle. Here’s how to start building your customer base.

Using Your Network

One of the quickest and most effective ways to get your first sales is by tapping into your existing networks. Don’t hesitate to reach out to friends, family, colleagues, and neighbors. These are the people who already know and trust you, making them more likely to support your new venture and spread the word.

  • Personal Outreach: A simple message or phone call can do wonders. Let them know about your new business and ask if they or someone they know might be interested in your services or products.

  • Social Media: Use your personal social media profiles to announce your side hustle. A friendly post on your Facebook or Instagram can alert your network about what you’re doing and how they can support you.

Launching Offers

When you’re just starting, the goal is to build a client base and generate positive buzz, even if it means not making big profits right off the bat. Consider introductory offers to attract customers: Offering your services or products at a discounted rate initially can be a powerful incentive for people to try them out. For instance, if you’re launching a window cleaning service, offering a 50% discount for first-time customers can lead to more bookings.

Building Relationships

With each interaction, focus on building a relationship rather than just making a sale. Personalized service and genuine care can convert a one-time customer into a repeat client. Keep communication open and ask for feedback to show that you value their opinion and are committed to continuous improvement.

Track Your Results

Keep a close eye on which strategies are bringing in customers and which aren’t. This will help you refine your approach and focus your efforts on what’s working. Remember, every customer is an opportunity to grow your network further—treat them well, and they will likely help you expand your reach.

By leveraging your network and launching compelling offers, you can start to build momentum for your side hustle. This initial push can help establish your presence in the market and create lasting relationships with your first customers, paving the way for sustainable growth.

Side Note: Encourage these early customers to leave reviews if they’re satisfied with your service. In the early stages, positive reviews and word-of-mouth referrals can be far more valuable than the initial revenue. For example, doing a stellar job at half price can lead to more referrals and a solid reputation, setting up a foundation for future full-price services.

Step 6: Continuously Gather Feedback and Improve

Once your side hustle is up and running and you've started to bring in customers, the next crucial step is to establish a cycle of feedback and improvement. This continuous loop will not only enhance your offerings but also solidify customer satisfaction and retention.

Get Feedback

The first order of business is setting up effective ways to collect feedback from your customers. Here’s how you can do it:

  • Surveys: After completing a service or sale, send a brief survey to your customers. Tools like Google Forms or SurveyMonkey make this easy and cost-effective. Keep the surveys short and sweet to encourage higher response rates.

  • Informal Conversations: Sometimes, the best feedback comes from casual conversations. If you run into a customer or they reach out to you online, take the opportunity to ask how they felt about your product or service and what improvements they might suggest.

  • Social Media and Online Reviews: Monitor your social media pages and online review sites (e.g., Google Business, Yelp) closely. Customers often use these platforms to share their experiences. Be proactive in responding to both positive and negative feedback.

Quality Improvement

With the feedback in hand, it's time to analyze and act on it:

  • Identify Patterns: Look for common themes in the feedback. Are customers repeatedly mentioning a particular aspect they love or something that didn’t quite meet their expectations?

  • Implement Changes: Use this insight to make informed changes to your products or services. Whether it's tweaking your recipe, adjusting your service protocol, or improving your product's durability, each change should aim to enhance customer satisfaction.

  • Communicate Changes: Let your customers know you're listening by telling them how you’ve used their feedback to make improvements. This not only validates their input but also demonstrates your commitment to excellence.

Customer Retention Strategies

Retaining customers is often more cost-effective than acquiring new ones. Here are some strategies to keep your customers coming back:

  • Loyalty Programs: Consider implementing a loyalty program that rewards repeat customers. This could be a discount on their next purchase, a free product for every ten purchased, or special offers on their birthdays.

  • Exclusive Offers: Send exclusive deals or insider information to your regular customers via email or text to make them feel valued and keep them engaged.

  • Outstanding Customer Service: Ensure that every customer interaction is positive. Excellent customer service can turn even dissatisfied customers into loyal ones if they feel heard and respected.

By continuously gathering feedback and committing to quality improvement, you can create a dynamic business that grows with your customers' needs. This ongoing process not only helps refine your offerings but also builds deeper relationships with your customers, increasing their lifetime value and bolstering the overall health of your side hustle.

Step 7: Set Goals and Scale

As you dive deeper into your side hustle, it’s crucial to lay out a clear and achievable roadmap. This is where SMART goals become invaluable, ensuring each target is not only strategic but also realistic and feasible.

Goal Setting with SMART Goals

To ensure your side hustle progresses effectively, let’s redefine the SMART acronym with ‘Realistic’ encapsulating its core, guiding you to set practical and attainable goals:

  • Specific: Clearly define what you aim to achieve, pinpointing exactly what success looks like.

  • Measurable: Attach quantifiable criteria to your goals for easy tracking and to know precisely when they are achieved.

  • Achievable: Your goals should stretch your abilities but remain possible within your current resources and capabilities.

  • Realistic: Focus on setting goals that are practical given your available time, finances, and technology. Ensure the goals are manageable and can realistically be achieved within the set timeframe.

  • Timely: Assign a specific deadline to each goal to maintain focus and prioritize your efforts effectively.

For example, if your side hustle is a tutoring service, a SMART goal might be: "Increase my number of clients by 20% over the next six months."

Scaling Your Side Hustle

With your SMART goals set, you can begin to focus on scaling your business effectively:

  • Growth Opportunities: Look for ways to expand your services or products, reach new customers, or enter new markets.

  • Increasing Efficiency: Assess your current operations to identify areas where efficiency can be improved, such as through automation or outsourcing.

Long-term Sustainability

To keep your side hustle thriving well into the future, consider the following:

  • Continuous Planning: Regularly revisit and update your business strategy to reflect changing circumstances and insights gained.

  • Strategic Hiring: Evaluate the benefits of hiring help to manage increased workload or expand service capacity as your business grows.

  • Diversification: Explore diversifying your offerings to stabilize and expand revenue streams. This might involve introducing new products or services that complement your existing ones.

By embedding realistic expectations within your SMART goals, you build a robust framework for your side hustle that promotes sustained growth and long-term success. This structured approach not only directs your immediate efforts but also supports the overall scalability and resilience of your business.
